About The Play

Real Voices was a play commissioned by UNIFEM to explore oppression in women worldwide. Using a mixture of transcript and news footage the stories of women from all corners of the world are brought together unified by the oppression they face whether it be rape and domestic violence in the UK or female genital mutilation and arranged marriages in Africa.

The extracts are placed together like the pieces of a jigsaw emphasising the strength and bravery of women the world over.

The play first opened in the Sherman Theatre, (Wales, UK) in 2004.
