STATEMENT OF PURPOSES

Theatre versus oppression
seeks to:
 

1.    Use drama as a form of therapy with individuals, groups & communities;

2.    Work with targeted groups in need of counselling achieved through development in drama and the arts in general;

3.    Integrate & reintegrate individuals into communities through therapy based drama and arts projects;

4.    Train individuals and groups to work with Augusto Boal’s Theatre of the Oppressed methods within their communities; to work with these individuals and groups to create programmes best suited to their socio-political environment;

5.    Provide an access to tools for use in environments which allow a broad use of the arts as social experience and by so doing increase access and encourage exposure to the arts for the communities in which we work;

6.    Use theatre (and other arts) as testimonials of socio-political situations; as a means of recording the facts  in an artistic form that becomes accessible to a wider audience;

7.    Provide skills and resources which enrich the relationships between the arts and communities;

8.    Encourage participation in the process and product of artistic creation as a form of healing;

9.    Create educational opportunities which enhance the academic experience through exposure to, and study of, issues of the human condition;

10.  Empower people to take an active role as functioning members of their communities;

11.  Offer alternatives for those who wish to discover non-violent ways of making social change and affecting social justice;

12.  Foster collaboration between, and support the efforts of, those individuals and organizations engaged in the struggle for non-violence;

13.  Encourage and provide tools to individuals and groups who are engaged in social/political/personal conflict to look to methods of resolution other than violence;

14.  Interpose art, artists and peacemakers between individuals and groups who are engaged in social/political/personal;

15. Initiate and maintain collaborative relationships with individuals and organizations whose purpose is related to the mission statement.
