Forum Syd - organisations collaborating for
global justice
for more
information see:

Forum Syd gathers two hundred
Swedish organisations working with international development assistance
and the forming of opinion on global issues. Member organisations
consist of major popular movements such as Save the Children Sweden and
the Swedish Society for Nature Conservation, as well as small societies
run entirely on a voluntary basis. Forum Syd also works with a large
number of organisations and networks worldwide. Our common aim is global
justice.
Organisations in Sweden have a long tradition of working with the civil
society in countries in the Global South and East. The aim of Forum Syd
is to strengthen and develop this cooperation. Within the framework of
Forum Syd organisations have the opportunity to exchange experiences and
increase their own understanding, create new methods for development
assistance and cooperate to achieve better results. Forum Syd also
strives to impact the policies of the UN, World Bank and International
Monetary Fund (IMF) on issues of importance for world development such
as trade and debt.
Forum Syd was formed in 1995 and is politically and religiously
independent. Our operations are largely financed through the Swedish
International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida).
Areas of work:
-
Shaping of public opinion. We cooperate
with other organisations to influence people in power on issues
related to global justice, conditions for NGO development assistance
and the role of civil society in development cooperation.
-
Capacity building. We arrange meetings,
courses and exchanges of experience between people from different
networks and organisations in countries in the Global North, South
and East. We also produce publications on issues central to
development work such as gender, environment, debt and trade.
-
Channelling of Sida funds. We provide
advice and financial support to Swedish organisations that carry out
development cooperation and provide information in Sweden on global
issues.
Forum Syd has offices in southern and
eastern Africa, Southeast Asia, Latin America and the Balkans, as well
as representation in Ukraine and Belarus. Development work here is
conducted jointly with local organisations.
Forum Syd has several different roles, but always one and the same
objective: supporting civil society as a force for just and
sustainable development in the worFor you to have a clearer picture
about us and what we do: I am employed with the Swedish umbrella NGO
called Forum Syd. It has more than 200 Swedish member organisations with
whom Forum Syd cooperates towards sustainable development and global
justice. Forum Syd has several regional offices around the World and
most of the member organisations work closely with small or large NGOs
in developing countries.
Tanzania
In Tanzania Forum Syd has its regional office for Eastern Africa, based
in Dar es Salaam. The Regional Director for the office is Maria Kempe.
In Tanzania we have been working with a HIV/AIDS Program since 2003. The
Program aims at encouraging smaller NGOs and CBOs in Tanzania to
incorporate issues of HIV and AIDS into their normal activities. The
partners are dealing with a wide range of community target groups and
are from all over the country.
Under the capacity development project for this year we have selected 16
partners which get support in strengthening their capacities. All of
them are spread across the country and of very different focus, size and
capacity level, so in order for us to offer them the best chance of
increasing the capacities that they need the most, we are allowing 12 of
them to develop their own individual capacity development plans, which
we then fund them to implement. The remaining 4 partners are all
focusing on theatre for community education, which is why we decided to
offer them a different approach, mainly based on strengthening their
theatre skills and team work. Jan-Jul 2007 they have all implemented
study circles as a method for capacity development, focusing on HIV/AIDS
and forum theatre as a technique. For this year (Aug 2007-Jun 2008) we
plan to offer these theatre groups a continuation by organizing a
workshop for them where they may share experiences and skills about
forum theatre and study circle methodology, and another workshop where
they gain skills in peer-education through theatre, using the Y-Peer
approach. The theatre organisations are:
Rulu Arts Promoters: Based in Dar es Salaam.
Umwema Group: Based in Morogoro.
Alpha Dancing Group: Based in Iringa.
Mshikamano Cultural Groups: Based in Iringa
